About

Dr Gehan Karunaratne is an Australian-trained Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, currently undertaking advanced international fellowship training in aesthetic plastic surgery across North and South America, alongside microsurgical breast reconstruction at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, Ireland.

Dr Karunaratne was born and raised in Sydney, where he attended Sydney Boys High School. He completed a bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, and this background provides a strong foundation in anatomy, movement and rehabilitation that continues to inform his surgical practice.

He subsequently graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from Griffith University on the Gold Coast, where he was awarded the University Medal. He then returned to Sydney for his prevocational training at St Vincent’s Hospital, while completing a Master of Surgery at the University of Sydney.

After being selected into the highly competitive Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery program, he undertook five years of specialist training across major teaching hospitals in Sydney, Melbourne and Launceston, gaining extensive experience in both reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons after passing his final specialist examinations in 2025.

His clinical and research interests include aesthetic surgery and complex reconstructive microsurgery. He believes in combining meticulous surgical technique with honest communication and personalised care to help patients achieve natural-looking results.

Outside of medicine, Gehan enjoys travelling, discovering new restaurants, following cricket, and spending time with family and friends. Dr Karunaratne will return to Sydney to commence private practice in early 2027 and looks forward to caring for patients across both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.
